Privacy Policy | Be'an Nice

Bean Nice LLC, doing business as Be'an Nice ("we," "us," or "our"), operates the Be'an Nice website and services (the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, how we use it, how we share it, and the choices you have.

1. Who this policy applies to

Be'an Nice is intended for users in the United States who are at least 18 years old. The Service is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. If you are under 18, please do not use the Service.

2. Terms used in this policy

Beanboard: your private account dashboard, where you manage your profile and preferences.

Settings: the area of your account where you manage your account data, including exporting a copy of it and deleting your account.

Regulars: other Be'an Nice users you have accepted as trusted connections. You can designate certain profile fields as visible only to your Regulars.

Public profile: your Be'an Nice profile as published at beannice.com/your-username, if you choose to publish it.

3. Information we collect

Information you provide

Account information: email address, password, display name, and username.
Profile information: avatar, city or ZIP code, and the favorites you choose to add to your profile.
Dietary and allergy information (optional): if you choose to add allergies or dietary preferences, we store them. They are treated as sensitive, kept with restricted access, and shown to other people only according to the visibility setting you choose.
Push notification token: if you turn on push notifications in the iPhone app, we store a device token so we can send you the notifications you enabled.
Communications: support requests, reports, and other messages you send us.

Information collected automatically

Device and log data such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited.
First-party usage data, including counts of how many times your profile has been viewed. We do not use any third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking services.

Information from third parties

If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive basic profile information from that provider, such as your name and email address.

Age verification records

We ask for your date of birth when you register, solely to confirm that you are at least 18. We do not store your date of birth. It is checked at the moment you submit it and then discarded. All we keep on your account is the date and time you confirmed you were 18 or older.

Separately, to enforce our age requirement and prevent repeated circumvention attempts, we log whether each registration attempt passed the age check, along with a cryptographic hash of the email address and IP address used. These logs are used for no other purpose and are deleted automatically after 90 days.

4. How we use information

To create and operate your account and Be'an Nice profile.
To verify that you meet our minimum age requirement of 18.
To make your public profile viewable at beannice.com/your-username when you choose to publish it.
To send transactional and account-related emails, including verification and password resets.
To send optional reminder emails, in-app notifications, and push notifications you have enabled.
To detect, prevent, and respond to abuse, fraud, and violations of our Terms.
To understand how the Service is used and improve it.

5. How information is shared

Public profile. Information you place on your public profile is visible to anyone who visits your profile URL, unless you mark a field as visible only to your Regulars. Because public profiles are accessible without an account, they may be found, crawled, indexed, and cached by search engines and other automated services. If you later make your profile private or delete it, copies may remain in third-party search caches, archives, or screenshots that we do not control and cannot remove. Please consider this before publishing anything you would not want to be publicly and durably associated with your name.

Regulars. Users you accept as Regulars can see the fields you have designated as visible to Regulars.

Location suggestions. When you type a location into your favorites, we send that text to Google’s Places service to return suggestions. That text is subject to Google’s own privacy practices.

Service providers. We share information with vendors who host, secure, and support the Service, including our database and hosting provider and our email delivery provider. These vendors process information on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. Push notifications are delivered through Apple's push notification service.

Legal. We may disclose information to comply with law, valid legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and property of Be'an Nice, our users, or others.

Business transfers. If Be'an Nice is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this Policy.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We do not run advertising on the Service, and we do not use third-party advertising or analytics trackers.

6. Your choices and rights

Access and update: edit your profile at any time from your beanboard.
Export: download a copy of your account data as JSON from Settings.
Delete: delete your account from Settings. Your profile is hidden immediately and your account and associated data are permanently deleted after 7 days.
Visibility: toggle your entire profile private, or mark individual fields as Regulars-only.
Notifications: manage reminder emails, in-app notifications, and push notifications from your beanboard and your phone's settings.

We extend the following rights to all of our users, regardless of where they live: the right to know what personal information we hold about you, the right to correct it, the right to delete it, the right to obtain a copy of it, and the right to opt out of any sale or sharing of it (we do not engage in either). We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of these rights, including by denying you service, charging you a different price, or providing you a different level of service.

To exercise any of these rights, use the tools in your beanboard and Settings, or email hello@beannice.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting on certain requests.

7. Data retention

We retain your account information for as long as your account is active.

When you delete your account, your profile is hidden immediately and you are signed out. After a 7 day window, we permanently delete your account, profile, favorites, connections, and device tokens from our active systems. Residual copies may persist in routine encrypted database backups for a limited period until those backups age out and are overwritten in the normal course. We do not use backup data to restore deleted accounts.

We do not retain the date of birth submitted during age verification. We keep only the timestamp recording when you confirmed you were 18 or older, for as long as your account is active. Age gate attempt logs are retained for 90 days, after which they are deleted automatically.

We may retain limited records for longer where required by law, or to resolve disputes and enforce our agreements.

8. Security

We use industry-standard measures to help protect your information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and row-level security policies on our database. Passwords are stored using one-way hashing and are never accessible to us in readable form.

No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

9. Children

The Service is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18. We ask for a date of birth at registration and reject any registration from a person under 18. As described in Section 3, that date of birth is checked and then discarded rather than stored. If you believe we have collected information from someone under 18, please email hello@beannice.com and we will promptly delete it and the associated account.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated by email or through the Service. The "Last updated" date above indicates the most recent revision.
